This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. The convocation was a special one in the sense that it was the first to be held at the newly constructed Student Activities Centre (SAC).
Seen in the photograph are, Mrs. Jaya Indiresan (wife of Director of IIT Madras, left) , Mrs. Indira Sivasailam (wife of Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, next to Mrs. Indiresan), Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest, centre), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, to Mr. Singh’s left hand side) and the gentleman behind Mrs. Kaul (wearing convocation robes) is Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay).
It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation.
