This photograph was taken during the visit of Prof. Hilbig and Mr. Westphal from the Technical University of Berlin. There were a series of meetings spread over a few days in which the two gentlemen met with the administrators and faculty of IIT Madras. This photograph seems to have been taken outside campus, but it is difficult to determine the exact location.

Seen in in the photograph, closest to the camera, Prof. S. Ramaseshan (Department of Physics) and to his left hand side Mr. H. Westphal (Director, Academic Foreign Relations Office, Technical University, Berlin, partially covered), Dr. P. Hilbig (Vice-Rector, Technical University, Berlin, third from Prof. Ramaseshan’s left) and Prof. W. Koch (Department of Physics, fourth from Prof. Ramaseshan’s left). Seated in the central row from left, Mr. S. S. Mani (Workshop Superintendent), Prof. V. Anantharaman (Department of Humanities) and Prof. R. K. Gupta (Department of Humanities) among other persons. The other persons are yet to be identified.

Photographer:

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
