The IIT Madras Contingent at the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet, 1970

IIT Madras hosted the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet in 1970. The students appear to be dressed in formals, which is not the case today, where sports uniforms have replaced the earlier trend. The IIT Madras team went on to win the General Championship in this year. There is a detailed report of the sports meet in the February 1971 edition of the student run magazine Campastimes.

The gentleman holding the flag has been identified as Mr. V. Prem Watsa, 1971 Chemical Engineering graduate. He is also a Distinguished Alumnus Awardee (1999). The person standing in the centre in the second row has been identified as 'Shorty' Nair, a talented footballer. The gentlemen were identified with the help of Mr. K. Sashi Rao (1969 B.Tech.) on 04 August 2025.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
