A bhangra performance at Mardi Gras 1983

This photograph was taken at Mardi Gras ‘83 which was held at IIT Madras from 26 January to 30 January, 1983. A cultural festival with various events spread over a number of days, Mardi Gras was well-loved in its time and has since been known as Saarang. 

In this image, a group of dancers performs bhangra on the stage at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). Mardi Gras comprised events of several types: arts and the performing arts (music, dance, theatre), quizzes, debates, and other informal events. 

In this image, a partially visible ‘Hemdev’s Real Estate and Rentals’ banner with a postal code is seen above the stage next to ‘Mardi Gras’ which is also partially visible.

N. S. Vinodh. After completing an early education in Bangalore, N. S. Vinodh obtained his B. Tech. in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras in 1986. Being the secretary of the Photography Club at IIT Madras during his third year, he was an avid photography enthusiast. He then went on to complete his MBA from IIM, Lucknow, and later spent his career holding senior positions in the field of corporate real estate with leading multinational financial services companies. He continued to pursue his hobby of photography, integrating it with his love of travel and wildlife.
