Institute Events , Student Activities

Seen in the image seated from the right in the second row is Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (Mechanical Engineering department), Prof. Sankaran (Civil Engineering department), Prof. Udupa (Chemistry department) and Prof. C. S. Swamy (Chemistry department). The venue is probably the Physics Lecture Theatre (PhLT).

The most looked forward to event at IIT Madras in the 60s was the annual Literary and Cultural Week. The first Literary and Cultural Week was held in 1964. Literary and Cultural Week became a very big part of the IITian culture and still is to this day under a different name, ‘Saarang’. It was an ever growing event that was very much looked forward to by the students as well as the staff. The participation at the event also grew over the years and what started out to be a five day event eventually became six. The event was extremely popular even then and participants came to attend the event from all over the country. Some of the participating Institutions, mentioned in the Annual Numbers (a campus publication) and Campastimes (a students’ publication) that can be found at the Heritage Centre, are Max Mueller Bhavan, A. C. College of Technology, Medical College (Bengal), Law College-Chennai, A. V. U. College of Engineering (Tirupati), Engineering College- Guindy, Ethiraj College, School of Architecture, Madras Christian College and S. I. E. T. Women’s College.
