Mr. R. Natarajan addresses the gathering at his farewell ceremony

Mr. R. Natarajan, the first Registrar of IIT Madras, spent five and a half years at the Institute. His involvement with IIT Madras went well beyond fulfilling his administrative duties. The relationships he maintained with the staff and students were warm and friendly. He was known to have handled any problem presented to him with a lively personal concern. He brought infectious enthusiasm to bear on the organization of all the Gymkhana activities. Mr. R. Natarajan's term as Registrar ended in 1965. A farewell party was organised in his honour in April that year. In the image, addresses the gathering at his farewell ceremony. His speech on this occasion was titled 'A Garland of Memories'. In his speech, Mr. Natarajan expressed his gratitude for having been given an opportunity to work at IIT Madras. He stated ‘..you cannot find a pleasanter place or more congenial work spot than our campus. I have not seen a place which compares even favorably with this..’. Mr. Natarajan quoted Shelley, Lord Byron, Charlotte Bernard and Lord Tennyson and also made references to the Old Testament and Louis XIV in his speech. Another notable excerpt from his speech is as follows: ‘..true, life leaves many memories behind, both good and bad- sometimes sweet, sometimes sour. But my six years stay at this Institute, I must say, has been a garland of golden memories..’.
