Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India, right) plants a sapling to commemorate the inauguration of the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Construction of SAC was completed in 1983. The inauguration of SAC took place on the same day as the 20th convocation.

Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India. He served his tenure from 1982 to 1987.

Seen in the photograph is Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, standing second from left). The rest of the individuals in the photograph are yet to be identified.
