This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. The event was held at the newly constructed Student Activities Centre (SAC).
Dr. Ramanna was an Indian physicist, who was known for his role in India’s nuclear program in 1964. The nuclear program was in its early stages at the time. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation.
Also seen in the photograph are from right, seated in the first row, Dr. H. V. Hande (Minister of Health), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture) and Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest).
