This photograph was taken on the 20th convocation day of IIT Madras. The President of India, Mr. Giani Zail Singh is a part of the group photograph consisting of important visitors, guests and administrators.
Seen in the photograph are Mrs. Jaya Indiresan (wife of Prof. P. V. Indiresan, to the left). Mrs. Indira Sivasailam (wife of Mr. A. Sivasailam, next to Mrs. Indiresan). Prof. Indiresan was the Director of IIT Madras, while Mr. Sivasailam was the Chairman, Board of Governors of the Institute.
Seen in the centre, Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, next to Mr. Singh) and behind Mrs. Kaul is Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay, wearing convocation robes).
It is mentioned in the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation.
