This photograph was taken at IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-84, a total of 580 students received their degrees during the 20th convocation, pushing the total number of degrees awarded by the Institute to 9537. The students in maroon robes are undergraduate students. The graduands in the off-white robes are most likely to be either Ph.D. students or graduands from other courses that were offered such as the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) course and so on.
