This photograph was taken on 22 March, during the handing of the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. The Indo-German agreement signed in 1986 made a provision for the Federal Republic of Germany to give IIT Madras the Siemens system. It was installed in a new building at IIT Madras. It was called the Computer Sciences Block.
