An Indo-German agreement was signed in July 1986 under which a Siemens 7580-E computer was to be given to IIT Madras by the Federal Republic of Germany. In a Campastimes interview, we learn that the Indian Government had to pay around 18% of the amount for the computer, while the Federal Republic of Germany paid the rest. This photograph was taken during the official ceremony where the Siemens 7580-E computer system was handed to IIT Madras.
Seen in the photograph, Mrs. Pushpa Srinath, Prof. L. S. Srinath (Director), Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany), Mrs. Eva Seitz and Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany). Prof. Srinath was the sixth Director of IIT Madras.
Mr. Klein had a career as a distinguished journalist, diplomat and lawmaker. Dr. Seitz and Eva Seitz first came to India in the 1960s. They were drawn to Indian Paharai paintings and also other art forms. They collaborated on several collections of Indian paintings. Dr. Seitz also authored several books.
