Mr. Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, as agreed upon in the Indo-German Agreement. Although the event took place in 1988, the system had been installed at the Institute towards the end of 1987.
The Siemens Computer would replace the older IBM 370 system and Campastimes wasted no time in writing about this. The ‘Edline’ section of the magazine talks about how punching cards and waking up early to wait in long lines will become a part of history with the arrival of the Siemens Computer.
