The books seen in the photograph appear to be periodicals belonging to the Central Library. The periodicals included 1,050 titles, which were received throughout the academic year.
The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1967-68 mentions that the number of registered books and pamphlets rose from 61,439 including 55,414 books and 6025 pamphlets, at the beginning of the academic year, to 69,799 by the end of the year. It included 58,860 books and 10,939 pamphlets.
The Library also received plenty of gifts of publications from various organizations and other governmental agencies. Some of these were received from German technical universities which cooperated with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
