Dr. Eppler was conferred the honourary degree of Doctor of Science on the same day as the Computer Centre inauguration. A special convocation was held before the inauguration of the Computer Centre at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). During his talk, “he said that developing countries must not imitate the course of development in the advanced countries and single mindedly pursue higher growth rates and larger gross national products.” He insisted that countries need to focus on meeting the basic requirements of its people in terms of quality of life and employment.
The event has been recorded in Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai’s speech given at the convocation and also in a report in The Hindu (18 November 1973). The speech specifies that the Special Convocation was held earlier in the afternoon, before the Computer Centre inauguration.
On the stage, from left, Dr. Erhard Eppler (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany), Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar), Prof. S. Sampath (Deputy Director), Mr. K. T. Chandy (Chairman, Board of Governors), Mr. C. Subramaniam (Union Minister for Industrial Development and Science and Technology), Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai (Director) and Prof. A. Ramachandran (Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India).
