Tharamani House

Campus Buildings , Campus Facilities

The building shown here was known as the Officers’ Hostel, and later came to be known as the Taramani Guest House. In the Souvenir Volume to commemorate the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke to IIT Madras on 3 December 1962 to lay the foundation stone, Superintending Engineer Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy writes “In addition to the 10 hostels for the students an Officers’ Hostel to accommodate 42 Officers has also been completed. The accommodation provided in the Officers’ Hostel is a single room. 12´ X 10´ for each Officer with an attached bathroom and a balcony.”

It currently (as of January 2021) has 83 rooms (18 suites and 65 air-conditioned rooms). Currently, there are also two A/C dining halls with a total capacity of 100 (70+30), an A/C conference hall for office meetings, lawn space for special occasions, and amenities on par with three-star hotels.

Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.
