The Central School at IIT Madras started operating on July 20, 1964. This Central School is part of a network of 1251 schools established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, both in India and abroad. The name ‘Central School’ was later changed to Kendriya Vidyalaya. The new school building was officially inaugurated by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar on January 20, 1965. The children of IIT faculty members were given first priority for admission.
