Dr. S. Bhagavantam at the High Voltage Laboratory in IIT Madras, 1969

Dr. Suri Bhagavantam, the well-known visionary scientist, administrator and architect of defense research was the chief guest at IIT Madras’s sixth convocation. Prior to the proceedings of the sixth convocation, he visited the laboratories and workshop facilities in the Institute.

In the image, from left, A German Technical Assistant, Prof. Y. Narayana Rao (Electrical Engineering Department, second from left), Prof. F. W. Rutloh (third from left) Dr. S. Bhagavantam (chief guest and Scientific Adviser to the Minister of Defence, fourth from left), Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, seventh from left), Prof. P. Venkata Rao (Head of Electrical Engineering Department, eighth from left), and Prof. Venugopal (Electrical Engineering Department, extreme right). Prof. Rutloh and the assistant were deputed from Germany to help the IIT Madras Power Engineering Section and also to help set up the High Voltage Laboratory. Identification by Prof. C. S. Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
