Administrators , Campus Buildings , Inaugurations
This photograph was taken on the day of the NCC building inauguration on 14 December 1965. NCC equipment such as boots can be seen neatly arranged in the shelves. Presently, the NCC equipment is stored in a small storage room behind the NCC office. It contains uniforms, hackles, beret caps, cap badges, shoes among other equipment.
The NCC building was completed at a cost of rupees 5.8 lakhs (according to the Seventh Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66). It was constructed to house the different units of the NCC in IIT Madras. At the time, there were three different units of the NCC. They were the 6 Madras Engineer Coy, 3 Madras Signal Coy and 6 Madras (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) Unit (2 Coy).
Major General Virendra Singh (Director-General, NCC) inaugurated the NCC building on 14 December 1965. He was also associated with IIT Madras even prior to 1965, when he was the chief guest on the Institute NCC Day on 4 December 1963.
The first Registrar Mr. R. Natarajan is seen in the photograph, at the doorway (third from left) and Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (in sunglasses, Superintending Engineer) is also visible. Mr. Ramaswamy came to IIT Madras in 1961 from the CPWD to head the construction of buildings on campus.
