Sringeri Swamiji at IIT Madras, 1965

Institute Events , Visiting VIPs , Campus Facilities

This photograph was taken during the visit of Sringeri Sharada Peethadhipati Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamiji. The Swamiji was the 35th Jagadguru Sankaracharya of the Sringeri Sarada Pitha. This visit has been recorded in an article titled ‘Brief look at the history of temples in IIT Madras campus’ by Arun Ayyar, Harish Ganapathy and Hemanth C. The authors note that the Swamiji visited the temple on 7 November, 1965.

According to the Sringeri website, Swamiji embarked on a tour across India in June 1964. He traveled across the country for four years continuously. It can be ascertained from this that his visit to IIT Madras was a part of this tour.

In the image, we can see Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, extreme right) and Prof. R. Krishnamurthi (Head of Humanities Department, sixth from right). The Swamiji can be seen wearing darker robes.
