Subbulakshmi and Mr. R. Natarajan, among others, are present in the audience. Mr. R. Natarajan (second from left in first row) was the first Registrar of IIT Madras. His tenure as Registrar had ended over a year prior to the fourth convocation. Ms. M. S. Subbulakshmi, “Nightingale of India”, as Sarojini Naidu called her, is a well-known figure in Indian classical music. By 1967 she had been awarded the Padma Bhushan (1954) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1956). To Mr. Natarajan’s right is his father, V. Ramachandra Iyer.
The chief guest of the fourth convocation of IIT Madras was Mr. C. Rajagopalachari (Governor-General of India). A total of 321 students graduated in 1967: 259 were undergraduates, 50 postgraduates and 12 Ph.D. scholars.
