Mrs. Iengar presents a trophy at the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet, 1970

IIT Madras was unable to clinch a championship at the Inter-IIT Sports Meets for almost a decade. It was during the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet in 1970 that IIT Madras won its first championship. The meet was held at IIT Madras. A report of the event was published in Campastimes (February 1971) along with a points table for each event. IIT Madras tallied 68 points to win the General Championship, while IIT Kanpur came in second with 40 points. The remaining three IITs (Bombay, Kharagpur and Delhi) shared 24 points each.

Mrs. Iengar distributed the prizes, while Mr. H. V. R. Iengar presided over the closing ceremony.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
