Mrs. Iengar gives away a prize at the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet held in IIT Madras, 1970

The Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras from 28-31 December. In a Campastimes report from February 1971, it is mentioned that Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the closing ceremony while Mrs. Iengar gave away the prizes. The overall winner was the host, IIT Madras who claimed 68 points, while IIT Kanpur came in second with 40 points. IIT Delhi. Kharagpur and Bombay tied for third place with 24 points apiece.

Seen in the photograph are Mrs. Iengar (wearing saree) and Mr. Navzer Mehta (General Secretary, to Mrs. Iengar’s right hand side). Mrs. Iengar was the wife of Mr. H. V. R. Iengar who was the Chairman of the Board of Governors at the time.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
