This photograph shows John Ferns, guitarist of the thrash metal band Brahma performing at IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. Brahma was one of the leading bands in India at the time. Formed in 1993, the Mumbai based metallers released a studio album in the 1990s before releasing a few more in the 2000s and 2010s.

Ferns started playing the guitar at the age of 16. He was initially a self-taught guitarist who later took formal lessons to learn music theory. He was inspired by the likes of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. His playing style comprises metal, rock, blues and neo-classical.
