Prof. Gerhard Rouve addresses the audience, 1970

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of the Hydraulics Laboratory on 3 August 1970. The event has been recorded in an issue of Campastimes. The report notes that Prof. Rouve spoke after the Director’s address. According to the report, he “gave a short history of the build-up and working of the lab”. The report mentions that the Laboratory was functioning for the past few years but the “inauguration marked the availability to private and government sponsored research.”

Seen in the photograph are, from left, Prof. Gerhard Rouve (Civil Engineering Department, at the podium), and seated, from left, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director of IIT Madras), Dr. K. L. Rao (chief guest and Union Minister for Irrigation and Power) and Prof. P. C. Varghese (Head of Civil Engineering Department). The other gentleman is yet to be identified.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
