The chief guest and speaker at IIT Madras’s first convocation that was held on the 11th of July, 1964 was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. On the day of the event, upon reaching the campus, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was received by Prof. B. Sengupto, Director of the Institute, and Mr. R. Natarajan, Registrar. The Chief Guest was then presented a guard of Honour by the cadets of the N.C.C. He inspected the guard along with Prof. G. V. N. Rayudu (2/Lt NCC commander, Department of Mechanical Engineering), which took place in front of the Humanities and Sciences Block (HSB) in the Institute campus. He took the salute from the dais specially created at the venue.
