The photograph was taken during the visit of Dr. Linus Pauling and his wife Ava Helen Pauling to IIT Madras. Dr. Pauling, the American scientist won the Nobel Prize (in Chemistry in 1954 and the Peace Prize in 1962). Ava Helen Pauling was a human rights activist who was involved in various social movements such as women’s rights, racial equality and international peace. The signatures of Dr. Linus Pauling and Ava Helen Pauling are found in the visitor’s book which is on display at the Heritage Centre.
This photograph was published in the Annual Number of IIT Madras 1966-67.
