This photograph was taken during a special convocation held at IIT Madras to confer the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) on Dr. Richard von Weizsäcker.
Dr. Weizsäcker was the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras with his wife Marianne.
As seen in the image, Prof. N. V. C. Swamy (Director, extreme right), Prof. R. Nagarajan (Head of Computer Science Department, second from right), Dr. Weizsäcker (third from right) and Ms. Maneka Gandhi (Union Minister of State [Independent Charge], Environment and Forests, wearing a black sari). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
