Alakananda was the ninth hostel to be constructed in IIT Madras. The hostel was inaugurated by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, the wife of Governor Singh. The April 1966 issue of Campastimes gives an account of the inauguration of the hostel and mentions that tea was served after the Director’s speech.
