This photograph was taken during the 35th Inter-IIT Sports Meet which was held at IIT Madras. The hosts won this edition of the Inter-IIT Sports Meet winning the gold in Athletics, Badminton (men), Basketball, Hockey, Table Tennis, and Water Polo. IIT Madras also won silver in cricket and weightlifting and bronze in swimming, tennis and volleyball.

This information has been recorded in the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1999.
