Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya was known as Puduperiyavar. He was the head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Pitham, also known as the Kanchi Matha. It was originally founded as the Kumbakonam Mutt in 1821 by Serfoji II Bhonsle, the Maratha king of Tanjore, as a branch of the Sringeri Mutt but eventually evolved into a separate entity.
Puduperiyavar visited IIT Madras when the Jalakanteshwara Temple was opened after renovation. The kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 18 June 1965 in his presence.
