During his visit to IIT Madras, Mahaperiyavar (Kanchi Kamakoti Peethadhipathi Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamiji) visited the Jalakanteshwara Temple on campus. It was upon his instruction that the deities were worshiped as Jalakanteshwara and Devi Katyayani. The Shiva linga was placed in a temple which was constructed to worship the God. Mahaperiyavar visited IIT Madras around eight months after the kumbhabhishekam or consecration ritual was done in June 1965.
During his visit, Mahaperiyavar reportedly conducted pujas to Sri Varasidhdhi Vinayaka and Sri Adipureeshwara at the Varasidhdhi Vinayaka Temple which is located behind the current Taramani Guest House.
