This photograph was taken during the 50th Institute Day of IIT Madras. During the ceremony, several Prizes are given to students, faculty and alumni. IIT Madras also presents its highest award to alumni, known as the Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA), during Institute Days.

Dr. Jagadeesh S. Moodera, seen delivering a speech in the photograph, was one of the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award that year. He graduated from IIT Madras with a PhD in Physics in 1978 and is most recently Senior Research Scientist at the Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Massachusetts.

The 50th Institute Day was celebrated on 17 April 2009. The chief guest for the ceremony was Mr. K. V. Rangaswami, an alumnus of IIT Madras, and the Whole-time Director & President (Construction), L&T Ltd. The ceremony was presided over by the then Director of the Institute, Prof. M. S. Ananth who was Director from 2001-2011.
