Mr. C. Subramaniam gives away a prize to Mr. Purushottam Ganpatrao Manusmare, 1961

This photograph was taken during the Second Institute Day of IIT Madras. Prizes were distributed at Institute Days to students, staff and faculty members of IIT Madras for their contributions to the Institute in academic and extracurricular activities. The chief guests often presented the prizes. The chief guest for this Institute Day was Mr. C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State).  

The student receiving the prize is Mr. Purushottam Ganpatrao Manusmare (second batch Metallurgy Department). Mr. Sarosh Talukdar (from the first batch) is seen standing behind Mr. Manusmare. (Identification by Mr. Anand Singh Bawa and Dr. Vijay Batra). 
 
Sarosh Talukdar went on to become a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. Following his degree at IIT Madras, Talukdar went on to pursue his higher studies at Purdue University. He also worked at McGraw-Edison for several years, where he developed simulation and optimisation software for electric power circuits.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
