Dr. A. L. Mudaliar addresses the audience at the Second Institute Day, 1961

Dr. A. L. Mudaliar assumed office as the first Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Madras on 1 January 1959. He served as Chairman from 1959 to 1969 for a period of 10 years and made significant contributions to the Institute during his term.

Mr. C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State and chief guest) can be seen (extreme left). He was Minister for Education, Law and Finance for Madras State from 1952 to 1962. Subramaniam was also present at the inauguration function of the Computer Centre of IIT Madras in 1973. At the time, he had just completed his tenure as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission (1971-1972).
 
The trophies and prizes placed on the table would be distributed to prize winners and students who had accomplished feats during the academic year.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
