The photograph was taken during the 50th Institute Day of IIT Madras on 17 April 2009. IIT Madras presents its highest award to alumni, known as the Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA), during Institute Days.

The people seated on the stage include the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award that year. They are, from the left, Mr. Jagadeesh S. Moodera, Mr. Shrikumar Suryanarayanan, Mr. K. V. Rangaswami (chief guest), Prof. M. S. Ananth (Director, IIT Madras), Mr. M. G. Parameswaran, Mr. K. Ravi Kumar, and Mr. D. Chandrasekhar.

The chief guest for the ceremony was Mr. K. V. Rangaswami, an alumnus of IIT Madras, and at the time, the Whole-time Director & President (Construction), L&T Ltd. Also seen on the stage is the then Director of IIT Madras (2001-2011), Prof. M. S. Ananth.
