This photograph was taken on 17 April 2009 during the 50th Institute Day ceremony. IIT Madras also presents its highest award to alumni, known as the Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA), during Institute Days.

The photograph has captured the then Director of IIT Madras, Prof. M. S. Ananth delivering a speech at the ceremony. Prof. M. S. Ananth has held several positions in IIT Madras including Professor and Head of Department. He was the Director of IIT Madras from 2001-2011.

The chief guest for the ceremony was Mr. K. V. Rangaswami, an alumnus of IIT Madras, and at the time, the Whole-time Director & President (Construction), L&T Ltd
