Sardar Ujjal Singh plants a tree in the newly inaugurated Alakananda Hostel, 1966

Inaugurations , Institute Events , Visiting VIPs

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel in 1966. According to the April 1966 edition of Campastimes, the programme started with the cutting of the ribbon by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh, followed by tree planting.

From the photographs available, we can guess that at least four trees were planted in the hostel by the chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras), Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the Director’s wife) and Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh. Tree planting was followed by the Director’s speech.

Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, wearing a tie) assists the chief guest as he plants the tree. The other gentlemen in the photograph are yet to be identified.

The Campastimes report seems to have given a second-hand report of the event. Owing to this, there appears to be a discrepancy between the report and the album – that it was Mrs. Singh who cut the ribbon, not the Governor, as suggested by Campastimes.
