Mr. Walter Scheel at IIT Madras, 1963

Visiting VIPs , Administrators , Academic Facilities

This photograph was taken during Mr. Walter Scheel’s visit to IIT Madras in December 1963. Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. During his visit to the Institute, he visited the Central Workshops, administrative building and also some of the laboratory facilities on campus. This photograph was taken at one such laboratory. Although we are not sure which laboratory this is, we can guess that it was a Chemical Engineering laboratory, based on the fact that Prof. D. Venkateswarlu (Head of Chemical Engineering Department) is seen to the extreme right (partially cut out of the frame).

Also seen in the image, Dr. R. A. Kraus (former Adviser to the Government of India for I IT, Madras, tallest in the photograph), Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, twelfth from right), Mr. Walter Scheel (Minister of Economic Cooperation, Federal Republic of Germany, ninth from right) and Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, fourth from right).

An identical photograph can be found in Album 0178 of the Central Photographic Section Collection under the ID: 001/0178/0008_1
