Prof. B. Sengupto explains the Institute map to the gathering, 1963

Visiting VIPs , Administrators , Institute Events

This photograph was taken during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany at the time.

The layout of the campus was prepared initially by the then School of Town and Country Planning, New Delhi, now called the School of Town Planning and Architects. The layout had four sectors: residential, instructional, hostel and recreational sector. It is possible that the map being shown in the photograph is this layout.

During this time, the administrative offices, Director’s office and Senate Hall of the Institute were housed at the Building Science Block (BSB). Based on this fact, we can guess that the photograph was taken at the BSB.

Seen in the photograph, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, explaining the map of the campus), Mr. Walter Scheel (Minister of Economic Cooperation, Federal Republic of Germany, seated closest to the map, wearing dark suit) and Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar, standing near the pedestal fan). The other persons in the photograph have not been identified so far.
