The photograph was taken during the 20th convocation day which was held in the newly built Student Activities Centre (SAC). The building was designed by the architect C. N. Narayana Rao. This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. According to the Annual Report of 1983, the Student Activities Centre (SAC) was built as a multipurpose auditorium cum indoor stadium. The dimension of the building was reported to be 80 metres by 55 metres. The building consisted of a central bowl, stage, spectator gallery, mezzanine floor, two conference rooms, cafeteria and a store room. It was further written that the building was intended for indoor functions, convocation, sports events, cultural activities, seminars and exhibitions. The bowl had a capacity of 900…
The referee in the photograph (standing on the raised structure) is most likely Mr. Shaukat Ali (yet to be confirmed). A basketball court is visible in the background.
Dr. Ramanna (standing, right) was an Indian Physicist, who was known for his role in India’s nuclear program in 1964. The nuclear program was in its early stages at the time. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation. Prof. P. V. Indiresan (extreme left) was the Director of IIT Madras from 1979 to 1984. Also seen in the photograph is, Prof. Surjit Singh (Chemistry Department, far right).

According to IIT Madras alumnus N. S. Vinodh, this photograph was taken on the way to Mahabalipuram possibly in 1987. It appears that a few students from the Civil Engineering department had gone there for a picnic.

This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation in 1983. According to the Annual Report of 1983, the Silver Jubilee Convocation was held on 18 September 1983. The chief guest for the event was the President of India, Mr. Giani Zail Singh. It was also attended by Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Minister for Education and Culture, Government of India). The building behind the car has been identified as Godavari Hostel and to the left of the photograph is the venue for the event, Student Activities Centre (SAC), and to the right is where the swimming pool is located.
