This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. The event was held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). The Centre was a newly constructed building. It provided an indoor facility for convocations to be held as opposed to the Open Air Theatre (OAT) where rains would often cause difficulties during convocations and events. This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation. The academic procession is a formation of two rows headed by the Registrar. The Director and the chief guest are the last two to enter the convocation hall. This photograph was taken at IIT Madras’ 20th convocation held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Prof. P. V. Indiresan was the Director of IIT Madras at the time. Prof. Indiresan contributed quite extensively to the Institute during this period. One of his major contributions to the Institution was the introduction of a credit system which aimed at helping the students academically by allowing them the freedom of choice of subjects. The system also focused on the consistency of grades. He also introduced a system of having Deans in the Institute for the first time. This was primarily to…

This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. The event was held at the newly constructed Student Activities Centre (SAC). According to the Annual Report of 1983, the SAC was built as a multipurpose auditorium cum indoor stadium. The dimension of the building was reported to be 80 metres by 55 metres. The building consisted of a central bowl, stage, spectator gallery, mezzanine floor, two conference rooms, cafeteria and a store room. The photograph was taken during the 20th convocation day that was held in the newly built Student Activities Centre (SAC). The event also marked the inauguration of SAC, which became a regular venue for convocations following this year. This kuthu vilakku (lamp) was lit to inaugurate the 20th convocation in 1983 by the distinguished guests including Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture) and Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras).

This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation. The event was held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Dr. Ramanna was an Indian physicist, who was known for his role in India’s nuclear program in 1964. The nuclear program was in its early stages at the time. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation.  Also seen in the photograph is Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director of IIT Madras, left).

The photograph was taken in 1983, possibly outside or near the venue which was the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India) was the chief guest for the convocation. He also inaugurated SAC on this day. A miniature flag of India and the emblem of the Government of India is placed on the bonnet of the car. The car has been identified as a Hindustan Contessa, from Hindustan Motors. (Identification by Dr. V. Santharam).

This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. Mr. Sivasailam served as the Chairman, Board of Governors, of IIT Madras from February 1981 to December 1987. Born in 1934 at Alwarkurichi, Mr. Sivasailam was an Indian industrialist, educationist and philanthropist. He was the Chairman and Managing Director of the Chennai-based Amalgamations Group of Industries, founded by his father, Mr. S. Anantharamakrishnan. The Government of India honoured Sri A.
