Mr. Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, as agreed upon in the Indo-German Agreement. Although the event took place in 1988, the system had been installed at the Institute towards the end of 1987. Seen in the image, from left, Mr. Hans Klein (at podium), Prof. L. S. This photograph was taken during the function held to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) was the chief guest at the event. The Siemens 7580-E computer system made computing a lot easier as it would not require one to use punch cards. According to a Campastimes interview, 80 terminals had arrived from Siemens. This photograph was taken at an official function during which the Federal Republic of Germany officially handed the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. This photograph provides some details of the visit of Mr. Hans Klein (Federal Minister of Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) to IIT Madras. The writing says “His Excellency Mr. Hans Klein Federal Minister of Economic Co-operation, FRG Handing Over Siemens 7580-E Computer System to I. I. T. Madras on 22nd March 1988”. Colour terminals were a rarity at the time, with most terminals having only single colours such as off-white or green. Album 0068           Next

This photograph was taken when the Siemens 7580-E computer system was being handed to IIT Madras. Mr. Hans Klein, the Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany handed the system officially to IIT Madras. Mr. Hans Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in March 1988 in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras on behalf of the German Government. The official function took place at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT) and the Minister visited the newly built Computer Sciences Block after the function.  Here, he is seen with Prof. H. N.  Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany) visited IIT Madras along with Mr. Hans Klein and other German visitors in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. The computer was gifted to IIT Madras by the West German Government as part of the Indo-German Agreement. The sapling was planted possibly to commemorate the opening of the Computer Sciences Block and to symbolize the Indo-German bond. This photograph was taken during the event held to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. The Federal Republic of Germany, under a provision of the Indo-German Agreement had agreed to give a new computer system to IIT Madras. It would replace the existing IBM 370 system which the Institute had acquired in 1973. Prof. Yegnanarayana is currently an INSA Senior Scientist at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad (As of 2022). This photograph was taken at the new Computer Centre at IIT Madras. It shows Mr. Hans Klein operating the Siemens system. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1987, 80 terminals were sent from Germany to India in the academic year. They were placed at the Computer Centre. The plan was to distribute the terminals across the campus once they were ready.   The Federal Republic of Germany gifted the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras as agreed in an Indo-German Agreement. The system arrived in 1987 and was installed by the end of the year. However, the official function…
