It was taken during the visit of Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) to the Institute. Mr. Hans Klein visited IIT Madras in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to the Institute on behalf of the West German Government. During his visit, he visited the Computer Centre in the Computer Sciences Block to take a look at the functioning of the devices. In 1988, several distinguished German visitors, including Mr. Hans Klein, Dr. Konrad Seitz visited IIT Madras. The reason for this visit was to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to the Institute. The computer was a gift from the Federal Republic of Germany. While the German Government funded the computer, the Indian Government too played a role in this. The Indian Government reportedly paid 18 percent of the amount. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to the Institute. The system had been set up at the new Computer Sciences Block towards the end of 1987. A total of 80 terminals from the Federal Republic of Germany were brought to the Institute. This photograph was taken during the function held to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) was the chief guest at the event. The Siemens 7580-E computer system made computing a lot easier as it would not require one to use punch cards. According to a Campastimes interview, 80 terminals had arrived from Siemens. The photograph was taken at the Bose-Einstein Guest House on the day that IIT Madras was handed the Siemens 7580-E computer system from the Federal Republic of Germany. Mr. A. L. Mudaliar was the sixth Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He was the son of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar, the first Chairman of the Institute and the younger brother of Prof. A. Ramachandran, the second Director of the Institute. He served as the Chairman from December 1987 to January 1991. The gentleman that Mr. Mudaliar is interacting with is yet to be identified.
