Mr. P. Raghavendran (3 year B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering) won the President’s Prize (awarded to the B. Tech. degree student who held the best academic record) in the year 1969. After his graduation, he joined Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) as a management trainee, and continued with them until 1994 in various capacities. During his time at IOC he also completed a two year management program at Sloan, MIT (1981-1983) and spent two years in charge of Petroleum in the Planning Commission, Government of India (1983-1985). Dr. Suri Bhagavantam (1909-1989), the well-known visionary scientist, administrator and architect of defense research was the chief guest at IIT Madras’s sixth convocation.Dr. S. Bhagavantam was born in Agiripalli, a village in Andhra Pradesh. He completed his primary education in Gudivada and acquired a Bachelor of Science in physics from Nizam College, Hyderabad. Mr. Joshy Paul Kallungal (5 year B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering) won the Governor’s prize (awarded for all-round proficiency in the B. Tech. degree course) in the year 1969. He was well loved by all, including the students of the Central School, during his time at the Institute. He joined IIT Madras in the year 1964 and made his mark in sports the very same year.
