Institute Days in the 1960s were held to award prizes to students and staff who contributed to the Institute in various fields, including extra-curricular and academic fields. Chief guest Mr. M. In the IIT Madras Annual Report of 1964-1965, it is mentioned that the chief guest Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam (Chief Minister of Madras State) distributed prizes to the students for academic distinction (1963-1964) as well as for various items of competition organised by the Institute Gymkhana in the fields of sports, literary and other extra-curricular activities.  Seen on the dais from left, Mr. Lionel Paul (Gymkhana General Secretary), Prof. G. R. Natarajan (Registrar) was known for his marvelous oratorical skills. His flair for the English language was noteworthy. Apart from his speeches, Natarajan was also an avid writer. He focused most of his articles on sports; cricket in particular.

In his address, Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) talked about Mr. M. C. Chagla, introducing him to the audience: "We have known him and we have known of his great reputation in many fields of national activities in which he has participated. As the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, as an Ambassador of our land to various countries, as one of the illustrious men who espoused the cause of India at the United Nations, he has won laurels everywhere and has earned the grateful appreciation of his countrymen". This was the second IIT Madras convocation at which Mr. Natarajan (Registrar) officiated. He was a popular and friendly personality on campus, mostly known for his love for sports; table tennis and cricket in particular. His oratorical skills earned him much fame and respect, as did his writings, which appeared in the Annual Numbers and also in a few editions of Campastimes.

Mr. M. C. Chagla (chief guest and Union Minister for Education) said that he was highly impressed by the institute and its professors.  Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (seen at extreme left, standing in first row) succeeded Mr. R. Natarajan as the Registrar of IIT Madras. Mrs. Shanti Sengupto, wife of Prof. B. Sengupto (Director) is also seen (to Dr. A. L. Mudaliar’s right hand side). This photograph was taken during the Sixth Institute Day of IIT Madras. Institute Days in the 1960s were held to award prizes to students and staff who contributed to the Institute in various fields, including extra-curricular and academic fields. Chief guest Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam (Chief Minister, Madras) distributed prizes to the students for academic distinction (1963-1964) as well as for various competitions organised by the Institute Gymkhana in the fields of sports, literary and other extra-curricular activities. It is not known to us what prize was won by the woman.

The President's Prize consisted of a gold medallion and National Savings Certificate of the value of Rs. 150. It was awarded to the best student of the B. Tech. Degree Course.  C. R. Muthukrishnan joined as a faculty member at IIT Madras from 1975 to 2003. Mr. M. C. Chagla (chief guest and Union Minister for Education) inspects the guard of honour by N.C.C. cadets before he enters the Open Air Theatre. He is being escorted by Prof. Lt. G. V. N. Rayudu. After inspecting the guard of honour, the Minister drove to the robing room at the entrance to the Open Air Theatre (OAT) where Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) received him.
