Saarang 2000 was a 6 day cultural festival that was held from 21st-26th January 2000. It was formally inaugurated by Prof. C. R. Muthukrishnan (Deputy Director, IITM). The inauguration was followed by a classical dance show by Ms. Shoba Natarajan (a disciple of Sri Vempati Sathyam). Over the course of 6 days, a number of literary and cultural events took place at various venues across the campus. ‘Big bang’ a Western music show was the last proshow of Saarang-2000 and was possibly held on 24th January 2000. The artists who performed that evening at the Institute’s Open Air Theatre were Juravi, Burn, Moksha and Nemesis Avenue. The Western music show was probably the only show in Chennai where almost all genres of western music were covered on one night. The show was highly popular among the younger audience. The artists covered ‘sing along’ popular numbers from the 60’s through the 90’s.

The ‘Lite Music Nite’ was easily the most popular event that was held at Saarang-2000 and was held on 23rd January 2000. The pro-show was performed by the popular singers, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam aka. SPB (Indian playback singer), S. P. B. Charan (Indian playback singer) and S. P. Sailaja (Indian Singer). The entire show was telecast live on Vijay TV and SPB established an excellent rapport with the audience and performed many audience requests.
