According to the IIT Madras Annual Report of 1964-1965, there was a variety programme by the staff and students of the institute as part of the celebration of the event. Dances, magic shows, plays, music performances and various cultural activities were a hallmark of Institute Day in the 1960s. It was a community event which brought together students, professors and staff members of IIT, children from Vanavani School, campus children and other residents of the campus. The persons in this photograph are yet to be identified.

The photograph shows performers (students) posing for a photograph with various musical instruments. The photograph also shows a trophy that was possibly handed to them on the Sixth Institute Day. Dances, magic shows, plays, music performances and various cultural activities were a hallmark of Institute Day in the 1960s. Dances, magic shows, plays, music performances and various cultural activities were a hallmark of Institute Day in the 1960s.  Seen in the photograph, from left, Mr. C. V. Sahasranamam (playing the lady character), Mr. T. N. Venkataraman (Chief Security Officer) and a gentleman (yet to be identified).    It was common for male performers to don the roles of women owing to the fact that IIT Madras did not have female students in the early years.
