Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the closing ceremony while Mrs. Iengar gave away the prizes. The overall winner was the host, IIT Madras who claimed 68 points, while IIT Kanpur came in second with 40 points. IIT Delhi. Kharagpur and Bombay tied for third place with 24 points apiece. The IIT Madras hockey team tasted victory in the Inter-IIT Sports Meet for the first time in 1970, when they beat IIT Kharagpur. K. Sashi Rao, member of the IITM hockey team from 1965-66 to 1970-71 writes in an article titled ‘Seven Years To Hockey Glory’ in Chennai 36, “We put up a splendid all-round team performance both in attack and defense and it was a great team effort and avenged the previous year’s finals defeat.” The trophy was presented by Mrs. Iengar, wife of the Chairman, Board of Governors. Mr. Iengar was the second Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He succeeded Dr. A. L. Mudaliar in 1969 and served as Chairman until 1972. According to a Campastimes report, Mr. Iengar presided over the closing ceremony while Mrs. Iengar distributed the prizes to the winners. Prof. A. Ramachandran was the second Director of IIT Madras. He succeeded Prof. B. Sengupto in 1967. Prof. Ramachandran was the Director of IIT Madras from 1967 to 1973. The Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet took place in IIT Madras from 28-31 December. The hosts won the championship with a considerably large margin of points. It was IIT Madras’ first ever win at the Meet. This event has been recorded in the February 1971 issue of the student-run campus magazine Campastimes. The Director’s Bungalow is located on Delhi Avenue. It is situated near the Bose Einstein Guest House and across the road from the stadium. Whereas the bungalow is in the open in the photograph, it is now surrounded by trees and plants which provide it ample shade (as of February 2021).

Madras’, “The student gallery was packed to the full inspite of the Davis Cup Match”. Das Bundesarchiv from Germany has documented a video of the President’s visit to India. Titled Der Staatsbesuch in Indien, the technicolour video shows roughly two minutes’ worth content of President Luebke in Chennai and IIT Madras. It can be seen that the students all turned out in white for the occasion.
Prof. Humayun Kabir (Union Minister) was an educationist and politician. He also wrote poems, essays and novels in Bengali. He was a renowned orator. In his speech, according to Prof. R. The Central Workshop (CWS) was established in 1959 as part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It was established with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany, to train B.Tech. students in various shop floor techniques and fabrication. Prof. Lechner was associated with the Central Workshop when it was started. The CWS received the ISO 9001:2000 quality certification from RWTUV, Germany in 2001.
