The Central Workshop (CWS) was established in 1959 as part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It was established with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany, to train B.Tech. students in various shop floor techniques and fabrication. Prof. Lechner was associated with the Central Workshop when it was started. The CWS received the ISO 9001:2000 quality certification from RWTUV, Germany in 2001. Over the years, the CWS introduced modern facilities such as gear and machine shops, which better suited the training in line with current industrial requirements. The workshop includes…

This photograph was taken during the foundation stone laying ceremony of IIT Madras. Dr. Luebke (President of the Federal Republic of Germany) was the chief guest for the event.  Prof. R. Krishnamurthi, in his article titled ‘3rd December 1962 – A Red-Letter Day’ in the Fourth Annual Number, writes: “Temporary gates and arches had been erected all along the roads to welcome the distinguished visitor. As of April 2021, the building is marked by its light blue colour. Presently, the area surrounding the building is filled with trees. The laboratory is located near the Central Workshop (visible towards the far right). In the Souvenir Volume of 1962, Mr. Y. S. The building in the photograph appears to be a C type building. It is likely that it is building C-34, although this cannot be ascertained. It is located on 2nd Cross Road. In the Souvenir Volume of 1962, Superintending Engineer Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy writes “The residential quarters are being located as near to the main Guindy-Adyar Road as possible in order to give easy access to the occupants of the quarters to the main-road, the State Transport etc. In the lay-out of the quarters efforts have been made to have a mixed colony, the houses for the Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers…

The building in the photograph has been identified as the Warden’s quarters (number 1). It currently serves as the NCC office, and it is located behind Himalaya Student’s Mess. In the Souvenir Volume of 1962, Superintending Engineer Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy writes, “This building has a total plinth area of 1,29,090 sq. ft. and a carpet area of 89,685 sq. ft. The entire building has three floors, ground, first and second floors. The lay-out of the various laboratories, classrooms, workshops have been finalised in consultation with the German planners and is in accordance with their requirements. The building shown here is the Officers’ Hostel, which later came to be known as the Taramani Guest House. It currently (as of January 2021) has 83 rooms (18 suites and 65 air-conditioned rooms). Currently, there are also two A/C dining halls with a total capacity of 100 (70+30), an A/C conference hall for office meetings, lawn space for special occasions, and amenities on par with three star hotels. K. M. Kripanarayan writes in the 15 December 1962 edition of Campastimes, in his article titled ‘President Luebke Lays the Foundation Stone of I.I.T. Madras’, “The student gallery was packed to the full inspite of the Davis Cup Match”. Das Bundesarchiv from Germany has documented a video of the President’s visit to India. Titled Der Staatsbesuch in Indien, the technicolour video shows roughly two minutes’ footage of President Luebke in Chennai and IIT Madras. It can be seen from the video that the students all turned out in white for the occasion.

R. Natarajan, the first Registrar of IIT Madras, is one of the key figures who played a significant role in the inception of the Institute during the initial stages. He served as the Registrar from 1959 to 1965. Known for his “genial and smiling countenance”, as M. Vikram Rao puts it in his article in a 1963 edition of Campastimes, Natarajan was a keen administrator of the Institute. Known for his love for cricket, as his articles in the publications so blatantly depict, his gift for writing complemented his love for willow and leather. Krishnamurthi’s article ‘3rd December 1962 – A Red-Letter Day’ talks about the proceedings of the event: “At exactly 4:30 p.m., the West German President and Mrs. Luebke entered the dais.
